Rest your head: This month’s reviews

Hotel Tilto, LithuaniaHotel Tilto, Vilnius, Lithuania: www.hoteltilto.com This boutique Irish hotel is located on Tilto Street, a sleepy lane running parallel to one of the main streets in Vilnius’ beautiful old town,  and it offers good value, very comfortable rooms. The hotel is just a stone’s throw from the Cathedral but the street is not noisy and the hotel is modern with plenty of historic touches (including a beautifully restored breakfast cafe) so it feels in keeping with its location. We found the staff to be friendly and helpful and the wifi also came in handy. Naturally, the hotel also boasts a ‘Guinness Bar’ to relax in! Breakfast offered plenty of choice. The rooms could be a little on the small side for some people but the comfort, location and service here more than make up for this, and after all, Vilnius offers plenty to explore so who needs a large room? The hotel staff are keen to offer advice for making the most out of both the city and the surrounding area. Sam Williamson

Dragon River Retreat, ChinaDragon River Retreat, Yangshuo, China: www.dragon-river-retreat.com  This hotel is perched on the banks of the Yulong River and is surrounded by the beautiful scenery of the limestone peaks and bamboo forests. It’s a peaceful spot 6km from Yangshuo and the hotel offers a free shuttle back and forth. To explore the surrounding area, the hotel has bikes for hire, which is the best way to get out into the lovely countryside.  There is also free wifi, a book library, laundry service and a pool table, not to mention some very nice gardens to enjoy. The rooms were smartly decorated, modern with chinese finishes, and good bathrooms. On arrival the staff were really helpful and offered plenty of advice about what to see locally. We felt that it was a great choice for exploring the region with a bit of R&R thrown in.  Louise Jones

Villa Obrist, AustriaVilla Obrist, Pertisau, Austria: www.achensee.info/villaobrist A family run bed and breakfast at the Austrian Tyrol’s beautiful Achensee, Villa Obrist is a really good value place to stay with en suite double rooms from just Eur55. It is located in a very quiet spot just a few minutes walk from restaurants and the mountain cable car, and only 10 minutes or so from the lakefront. It’s a fairly typical chalet style set-up, with an excellent breakfast included and rooms have a small balcony. Although our room was a little old fashioned in its decor, it was serviced every day and was absolutely spotless with a very comfortable bed and plenty of storage space. The host only speaks a little English but is very friendly and helpful. For the price you just couldn’t ask for more, and the Achensee is a stunning alpine area for outdoor pursuits.
