Book Review: Wild Guide: Devon, Cornwall and South West

Wild Guide to the South WestWild Guide: Devon, Cornwall and South West, by Daniel Start, Tania Pascoe, Joanna Keeling (Wild Things Publishing Ltd) RRP £14.99:  New from the publishers of Wild Swimming, this Wild Guide book and accompanying app takes you on a voyage of discovery to the lesser-known corners of Britain’s favourite holiday region.

It features ‘Famous Five-style’ outdoor adventures, hidden places and the best wild places to eat and stay, and it inspires with stunning photos and engaging writing. The aim of the book is to celebrate simple adventures close to home, and to encourage families and children to seek new adventures in the great outdoors. There are over 500 innovative suggestions to help you plan the perfect escape, from secret beaches and hidden places to swim, camp or canoe to ancient woodlands, lost ruins, night walks and artisan food.

We certainly found it to be a comprehensive compendium of what is waiting to be discovered across the region, but what makes this guide unique is the personal tone and the celebration of simple old fashioned adventures. The images are inspiring and the maps have accurate digital mapping references. Arranged in clear sections based on area it is an easy guide to navigate. And much like in the Famous Five-style adventure books, the authors won’t let any adventurers go hungry, with their fabulous suggestions throughout for delicious local food. Now you know where to head when Spring arrives! Ben Jones
