Gear review: Macpac child carrier

Macpac’s award-winning Possum child carrier lets you get off the beaten track and take your child along for the ride. The carrier is based on the very well proven Macpac system for climbing and trekking backpacks, meaning it is both durable and very comfortable. It features a fully adjustable harness, a 15 litre zipped pocket plus a 25 litre base pocket, meaning you can also use it to carry essentials for your outing. Although heavier than your average backpack due to the internal framing, at 3.1kg it doesn’t add too much to the weight of your child. The variable child seat can be adjusted as he or she grows, and there are front and rear foot loops for safe and secure loading and unloading. Other useful features include the zip pocket for valuables on the waistband and shoulder and head pads that are removable for washing. The only minor cons are that the raincover can be fiddly to put on, and the sunshade (which costs extra) does not fold or fit neatly into the pack. Overall, a well thought out design and very good quality; worth the investment for families who are keen walkers.
