Omizutori (water-drawing festival), Japan
1,200 year old Buddhist ceremonies at the Todai-ji temple in Nara with blazing torches and chanting monks on the last night of the festival.
Paro Tsechu Festival, Bhutan
An amazing and colourful event in the spectacular Himalayas, with hundreds of locals gathering to witness the masked rituals of monks in their vivid robes.
Semana Santa (Easter), Mexico
31 March – 4 April
One of the countries biggest festivals with processions, costumes, fireworks, music and dance. Celebrations are nationwide but particularly exuberant in Chiapas.
Fallas de Valencia, Spain
Valencia’s wild fiesta with five nights of partying and parades, culminating in the last night when all the city lights are switched off and locals set fire to hundreds of large papier mache statues stuffed with fireworks.
Sakura Matsuri (Cherry Blossom), Japan
Late March / Early April
Tokyo’s Ueno Park or Aoyama cemetery are especially good places to witness Japan’s famous pink and white cherry blossom phenomenon.
